An Independent Sixth Form College Can Open the Door To University

As A level exams are steadily approaching this year there was a discussion on a popular TV morning news channel regarding entrance routes into University.

It can be tough getting through to your university of choice and many high grade A level candidates fall short at attaining their goal.

The discussion suggested that certain Universities were only accepting grades from first time A Level results and concerns were sent out to school leavers who are re-sitting their A levels in the hope of acceptance to their desired campus. It was also speculated that even the highest A level achievers are turned down for bias and bureaucratic judgements and that selection processes favoured more ‘recommended’ candidates, who in turn were getting the placements. Within the elite Universities in the UK it has been hinted that being a ‘family friend’ or having a powerful influence in one’s constituency may have a sway in any ‘selective process’ or decision making that course leaders, deans, and University officials undertake.

I believe the comments and themes discussed on this television show were pure speculation and that the majority of universities have equal standards.

How can a person’s full potential be analysed in a succession of 1-3 hour exams?
I know plenty of people who have flunked their A-Levels, have attended A level re-sits at a recommended independent sixth form college and have been welcomed into their university of choice.

A level re-sits do count! independent sixth form colleges provide a second chance, an opportunity to prove one’s potential on paper and most of all – an opportunity to be invited to attend that all important University interview and a chance to shine!
I know one person, albeit a very lucky individual, who actually applied to a course through University clearing after utterly flunking A Levels. I think the grades this person achieved was a D, an E and a U. They attended the interview and exuded such a passion for the subject of choice and had even taken time to produce a portfolio outside of school studies which ultimately landed them the placement.

So, I hope this small case study demonstrates to six formers who have well and truly messed up their A level exams first time around to realise that there is more than one way to skin a cat.

Ultimately, one way or another, you need to get to that interview! If you have flunked out – then don’t panic…sit down…relax and consider researching your options. A level re-sits could be the advisable and guaranteed approach, perhaps a sure way of opening the door to that excellent opportunity. Your first step is to find a recommended independent sixth form college that achieves a high pass rate.

Happy studies and good luck with any future career prospects.
